liberal Self-righteousness

I went to a very liberal college, which I loved but I feel like a big part of modern progressivism has become overly self-righteous. Not everyone, but some feel so advanced in their ideas, so much further ahead of everyone else that any sort of dialogue is beneath them. It kills debate and alienates me, not to mention people with even more conservative values. I think we should be encouraging open and compassionate discussions, convincing the other side with facts. Outrage is justified at people holding certain extreme values, but you shoot your movement in the foot by alienating the other side.
